Jim Haynes has been awarded the Order of Australia Medal in the 2016 Australia Day Honours List 'for service to the performing arts as an entertainer, author, broadcaster and historian'.

Among the achievements listed as instrumental in the awarding of the honour are Jim's work as an entertainer, songwriter and recording artist, as well as his career as a successful author and editor of 24 books celebrating Australia's social history and verse heritage.

Also listed as deserving of recognition are his work as a broadcaster (particularly for over 12 years of Australiana on 2UE's Weekend Show with George and Paul) and his part in the creation of the Stone The Crows Festival for Grey Nomads.

Jim's involvement in the Country Music Association of Australia (as a board member for 15 years) and his part in developing courses for the CMAA's Academy, plus his role in the creation of morning shows at the Tamworth Festival and spoken word events at the Port Fairy Festival, were also considerations in awarding the honour.

Jim says he is surprised, proud and humbled by the award and is grateful to all those who have helped him on his journey and supported his efforts to celebrate our Aussie culture, history, verse, music and humour. He wants to acknowledge his Tamworth, Wagga Wagga and 2UE friends, and especially his wife, Robyn.

'Behind every successful man,' Jim commented, 'there is a very surprised woman!'

Jim is grateful to the media for all the attention but wanted to point out that he was inducted into the Country Music HANDS of Fame in 1997 - not the HALL of Fame to which The Daily Telegraph kindly promoted him. He was made a Life Member of the Australian Country Music Association in 2015 and his original gold suit is in the ACMF museum - Jim joked that maybe that's where he should be now!
